Paul M. Buchanan

Paul passed away peacefully surrounded by family, loved ones and friends on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at age 75. Predeceased by his wife, Paula; and parents, Andrew and Lelia of Mt. Morris. Survived by his children, Wandalee Bernardo, Lynda Cheney, David Bump, Paul Bump, Robert (Kellie) Buchanan, Stephanie (Jeremy) Daino and Andrew (Melissa) Buchanan; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; brother, Gary (Debbie) Buchanan; and several nieces, nephews and dear friends. After serving in Vietnam as a radio communication specialist with the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV), Paul found a home with the New York Army National Guard at the Main St. Armory with the 209th Field Artillery Battalion which eventually moved him over to the Culver Road Armory in Rochester. Paul finished his military career with over 30 years in combined service at the Patriot Way Armory (Weidner Road) with the 1/142 Attack helicopter battalion (Blackhearts) as a Sergeant First Class as the Battalion PSNCO in the S-1 Section. After his retirement, Paul continued his military service as a civilian contractor assisting the Recruit Sustainment Battalion – working alongside his son in the Recruiting and Retention Battalion for over 5 years. He was known to continually visit his brothers and sisters in-arms for years to follow and have a conversation, cup of coffee, or make a copy or two along the way. Paul was a willing and faithful servant to The Father's House where he called his home. He was always available, cheerful, and generous. He always expressed gratitude for the community of brothers and sisters God placed in his life. Paul enjoyed serving the church and signing up new members, although he was no stranger to accepting any role if he was needed. He may have even worked the lights and got behind the video camera at some point. When not found in uniform or church, Paul was often found scratching off lottery tickets while watching any sports game he could find on ESPN. He enjoyed sports so much that he found the time to bring Legion baseball back to the Western New York area in the 90’s. His children and grandchildren were the apple of his eye. They would frequently go for long drives throughout the area and would talk about his history, experiences and answered any questions they had about his life. On weekends he would be seen at a Red Wings game, a grandchild’s sports game or snuggling on the couch with a cup of coffee and his favorite four-legged friend. The friendships and connections Paul made throughout his life journey were most meaningful to him and brought him great joy! He has touched so many people and will be forever in everyone’s memory. Interment, Western NY National Cemetery in Corfu. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
