Joyce Elaine Jones

Joyce Jones passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 12, 2023 at the age of 88. Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Rodney; and their children, Greg Jones, Lanette Lilly (Kevin), and Eric Jones. Joyce is also survived by her adored grandchildren, Rachel Oyler (Damien), Danielle Jones, Alexandra Jones, Scott Lilly (Jennifer), Meagan Rhodes (Nathan), Joshua Lilly (Stef), Kaleigh Moore (Weston), Jacob Jones, Camryn Jones; and 14 cherished Great Grandchildren and many dear friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Francis and Elizabeth VanValin; and her siblings, Annette Welty (Guy) and Robert VanValin. She loved her family selflessly. Her family and friends are heartbroken and she will be terribly missed, but they take comfort in knowing that she is rejoicing in her heavenly home. Joyce began her college years at Roberts Wesleyan College, Lycoming College and then attended the nursing program affiliated with Wheaton College where she obtained her registered nursing degree in 1958. She was a compassionate and patient nurse to all she cared for from her patients, family, and even church members who needed medical assistance. At an early age, Joyce accepted Jesus as her Savior. She had a deep desire to use her talents for Him. As a devoted wife to Rodney, she supported him in the pastorship of various churches for 47 years. This journey took them from Williamsport, PA, to Louisville, KY, to Tulsa, OK, to Oklahoma City, OK and then to Chili, NY. Here they faithfully served at Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church, Bethany Chapel Free Methodist Church and finally Grace Covenant Church for 32 years. Rodney and Joyce were quite the team and complimented each other in such a way that Rodney drew strength to serve the church’s needs for nearly 5 decades. Joyce loved her church family, and was involved in many facets of ministry such as: organist, pianist, Ladies Fellowship, Tot’s Church, and much more. One of Joyce’s greatest joys in her life was her role of being a Mom, All her children feel so blessed to have Joyce as their Mom. She was the heart of their home, filling it with love, laughter, delicious food and beautiful memories. As a Grandma and Great Grandma, Joyce had the ability to make each grandchild feel special and so very loved. Whether writing letters of encouragement while they were away at college or taking them to their favorite restaurant on their birthday…each grandchild knew they were remembered when apart and always loved. Above everything else, Joyce’s family knew that she prayed for them daily. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Joyce’s life at her Memorial Service on Saturday, March 4th at 1:00PM at Grace Road Church, 440 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14607. A time of fellowship with the family will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grace Covenant Church, 224 Chestnut Ridge Road, Rochester, NY 14624.
